Overview
Charts are the core building blocks of your dashboard. Using the Add Element feature, you can select from various visualization types, such as line charts, bar charts, donut charts, funnel charts, data tables, or text boxes for headings and notes. Every element can be customized. If you no longer need a chart, you can easily remove it from your dashboard with just a few clicks.
Accessing the Function
To create or manage charts, go to the Dashboard in the main menu. Here, you'll find all options for adding new charts, customizing, and deleting existing ones.
Step-by-Step Guide
Creating a Chart
Step 1: Add Element
To create a new chart, click Add Element at the top of your dashboard. A page will open showing all available visualizations.
Step 2: Select Chart Type
Now, choose the desired chart type from the list. You can select from options like:
- Line Chart: Ideal for analyzing trends and developments over days, weeks, or months.
- Bar Chart: Useful for directly comparing multiple values or key metrics.
- Donut Chart: Shows percentages or how different categories are distributed by share.
- Funnel Chart: Great for visualizing stages or conversion funnels.
- Data Table: For a clear, tabular display of your data – especially helpful for detail analysis or exporting.
- Text Box: Place free text, headings, or notes directly on your dashboard.
Your chart type selection will determine which further configuration steps and options are available next.
Step 3: Adjust Appearance
After choosing your chart type, you can adjust its appearance and options:
- Scale (e.g., for bar charts):
- Linear: Values are displayed evenly, best when values are of similar magnitude.
- Logarithmic: For clear presentation if some values are much larger or smaller than others.
- Time Settings: Choose whether your data should be shown daily, weekly, or monthly to quickly spot seasonal changes or trends.
- Metrics/Dimensions: Select which KPIs are shown in the chart or compared. Depending on the chart, you can combine several metrics.
Note: Depending on the visualization type, there may be additional specific options. Not every option is visible or relevant to every chart type.
Step 4: Review/Edit Title
Give your chart a meaningful title or adjust the automatically suggested title. Use the pencil icon to edit the name directly. You can also change the title at any time later via the Actions menu by selecting Rename. A clear title helps you and others quickly understand your chart's purpose.
Step 5: Save Chart
When you're done, click Save to add the new element to your dashboard. Depending on the data source, it might take a moment for the chart to be populated with data.
Managing Charts in the Dashboard
To edit or customize an existing chart, open the Actions menu (usually represented by a gear icon) on that chart. Here, you can:
- Configure: Adjust the chart's settings after creation.
- Rename: Change the chart title directly on the card.
- Duplicate: Make a copy of the element, which appears at the end of the dashboard. This is especially helpful if you need several similar charts.
- Delete: Permanently remove the element from your dashboard (see next step).
Deleting a Chart
If you want to remove a chart, open the Actions menu and click Delete. A confirmation dialog will appear asking: "Do you really want to delete the chart 'Name'?" Once you confirm, the element is removed right away.
Settings & Options
Some settings apply to the entire dashboard, not just individual charts. Under Dashboard Settings, you'll find options for displaying or managing permissions for the whole dashboard. These settings only affect the full dashboard, not single charts.
Limitations & Special Notes
- Permissions: You need editing rights to add, configure, duplicate, or delete charts. Without these rights, such functions are not available.
- Dashboard Types: For some dashboards, like AMC dashboards, actions like duplicate or delete may not be available.
- Data Display: After creating a new chart, it can take some time (up to 24–72 hours, depending on the data source and period) for data to fully appear.
- Delete Function: When deleting a chart, only the element is removed from your dashboard. The underlying data sources remain unaffected.
- Empty Dashboards: If your dashboard is empty, a message will appear. You can still start right away by adding a new element.
Tips & Best Practices
- Always use clear, descriptive titles for your charts. This makes navigation easier and saves time when searching.
- If you need a similar chart with just a small change, use Duplicate and then adjust as needed.
- Use Edit Layout to rearrange your most important charts for better visibility.
- Only use the Logarithmic scale for data with very large differences. In most cases, Linear is recommended.
- After creating or modifying a chart, allow some time for data to appear so you get the most accurate results.
