Overview

With the Edit Default Bid feature, you can change the default bid directly in the Analytics view for one or multiple ad groups. Adjustments can be made using the edit option in each row or for several groups at once by selecting multiple rows. Once you confirm your change, it is scheduled automatically and implemented shortly thereafter.

Accessing the Function

You’ll find this option in your Analytics environment. Go to Analytics in the main menu. In the navigation bar, click Ad Groups. The column for the default bid is called Default Bid. To edit the default bid, click the pencil icon in the Actions column in the row of your chosen ad group.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Open Ad Groups

Go to Analytics > Ad Groups to see all relevant groups. The table shows all existing ad groups, including the Default Bid column. Use the search field and filters to find specific groups or narrow down the list.

Step 2.1: Change Multiple Ad Groups at Once

Select one or more rows using the checkboxes in the overview. When you have at least one row selected, an action bar appears above the table with the Edit Default Bid button.

Click Edit Default Bid to open the action panel. Here you have the following options:

  • Select how the bid should be adjusted in the “Operator” dropdown:
    • Increase bid by: Raises the current default bid by your chosen amount or percentage.
    • Decrease bid by: Lowers the default bid accordingly.
    • Set bid to: Sets a new fixed value as the default bid.
    • Increase bid over CPC by: Increases the bid relative to average CPC.
    • Reduce bid below CPC by: Lowers the bid relative to average CPC.
    • Match bid to CPC: Sets the default bid exactly to the current CPC you choose.
  • Depending on the operator, you can enter a number and/or choose percent or currency as the type.
  • Click Apply to confirm, or Cancel to discard changes. While your changes are being processed, Apply will be disabled.

Step 2.2: Change a Single Ad Group

Click the pencil icon Edit in the row of the ad group you want to modify. In the Ad Group Details dialog, you’ll see the Bid field where you can enter your new value. Click Save to schedule the change. In this dialog, you can also edit the status of the ad group, such as setting it to Enabled, Paused, or Archived.

Settings & Options

  • Use Edit Columns to control whether the Default Bid column is shown in your table.
  • Global filters and the date range in the header affect which data and time periods are displayed, and therefore which selections you can edit.

Limitations & Special Notes

  • Changing the default bid is performed asynchronously: after you confirm, you’ll see a success message, but it takes a moment for the change to become active.
  • The action bar and its bulk options are only visible when you select at least one row.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Test new bid settings with a few ad groups before applying them to a larger group.
  • Use Set bid to for precise targets. Percentage adjustments are great for optimizing across many groups.
  • Remember: The setting in the Ad Groups tab affects the default bid, while the Targets tab deals with bid adjustments at the target level – each impacts a different aspect of your ads.
